Set up a local phone number

When you order the SIM card it can take from 2-5 business days to arrive then you can activate it via their mobile application.

Your First Day at Work

On your first day at work you should bring your passport, your DS-2019 form, and your Sevis with you. HR should contact you before your arrival day to schedule your first day at work. 

Social Security Number

In order to get your Social Security Number (SSN), first you need to check-in with your J-1 sponsor as soon as you arrive in the US. 

After you have checked in with your sponsor, you may apply for a Social Security Number. 

You need to gather a printed version of the required documents before going to the Social Security Administration (SSA) office including : 

  • Passport with enclosed valid J-1 Visa 
  • Form DS-2019
  • I-94 record
  • Job offer agreement
  • The program sponsor letter provided together with your documents

When you turn in the SS-5 application form at the office make sure that:

  • You write your name and date of birth exactly like it is written on your passport and Form DS-2019
  • You must mark on the application that you are a Legal Alien Allowed to Work.

NOTE: If the address you provide on the application is incorrect, you will have a delay in receiving your SSN. If you need to change address before receiving your card, you may set up a ‘mail forwarding address’ at (usps.com) or in person at your local post office.
