How to Obtain Your Social Security Number (SSN)

To get your SSN, first, check in with your J-1 sponsor as soon as you arrive in the US. After checking in, you can apply for a Social Security Number. Gather a printed version of the required documents before visiting the Social Security Administration (SSA) office. These documents include your passport with a valid J-1 visa, Form DS-2019, I-94 record, job offer agreement, and the program sponsor letter provided with your documents.

The nearest SSA office in Cincinnati is located at 550 Main St, Cincinnati, OH 45202. You can contact them at +1 800-772-1213. The office operates Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM and is closed on weekends.

When submitting the SS-5 application form at the office, ensure you write your name and date of birth exactly as they appear on your passport and Form DS-2019. Mark on the application that you are a “Legal Alien Allowed to Work.” Note that providing an incorrect address on the application can delay receiving your SSN. If you need to change your address before receiving your card, set up a ‘mail forwarding address’ at [usps.com] or in person at your local post office.
